But if we don't understand how to overcome these challenges, we're never going to grow. Today, we're talking about how to grow as a person and a leader. Then, I'm going to unpack an article on why you should invest in yourself. And finally, we'll spend some time journaling about the areas in your life you need to grow. Why It's Okay to Be Bad at Something In order to grow, we have to get outside of our comfort zones. We have to be willing to invest in ourselves and learn something brand new. One of my favorite ways to grow and become better is by surrounding myself with people who are better at things than I am. I love to seek out people who are really good in certain areas of their lives that I want to be good at and ask them to hang out. Yes, it's humbling-but that's where growth happens. If you want to be better in any area of your life, you've got to be willing to be the small fish in the big pond. You've got to be willing to get outside your box and your comfort zone and invest in yourself to learn something new. The Best Thing to Invest In I want to spend a few minutes unpacking an article I saw recently on Forbes.com called Why You Should Invest in Yourself by Amy Modglin. This article is a great reminder that the things we struggle with are actually really common to most of us. But if we don't understand how to overcome these challenges and barriers, we're never actually going to grow. In the article, Amy shared about a lack of confidence she had and the fear that kept her from investing in herself. She said that all changed when her friend and mentor, John Maxwell, said, "Growth doesn't just happen." Amy's biggest barrier was being afraid she wasn't worth it. She wasn't investing in herself. The same thing is true for you and me. You're not going to get to somewhere new by doing the same thing you're doing today. You have to do something different. You have to invest in yourself. Remember: You get to have a say in who you become, but you've got to do something about it. You can't just sit on the sidelines. You have to take the reins. You have to get in the game. You have to read a book, get a coach, go to a conference. You have to do something. You are worth it. Are You Growing? Today, I want you to spend some time reading Ephesians 4:1-16. This passage is saying just grow to grow. Not to be better than others. Not to be impressive. Grow so that you're not tossed back and forth. Grow so that you have a solid foundation. Grow to become more and more like the God who created you. Grow to become more like Christ. I want to give you a few questions to consider as you journal, as you pray about this, and as you think about what this means for you in your faith walk. How do you grow? How have you matured in the last year? How are you growing in love?

Today, we're going to talk about-yep, you guessed it-feelings and the appropriate (and important) role they have in our lives. Chip Dodd, bestselling author of The Voice of the Heart and other brilliant books, joins us to talk about feelings, vulnerability and the responsibility we all have to own them. Then, we'll pull out our journals as we process our emotions and feelings. How to Understand Your Feelings Whenever we face an issue or problem, it's easy to try to fix the issue at the surface level. But what's interesting is that often times, what's on the surface of the issue isn't even the problem itself. No matter what the problem is, there's always a root. But you have to be willing to uncover it layer by layer by layer. And if you can get to that deeper layer-if you link it to the root of what's really going on-you can solve it. It's there that you can find healing, deeper communication, intimacy and connection. The question you need to be asking yourself and others is simple: Why? And then keep repeating it until you get to the root. You'll sound a little like a broken record, but you know what? It works. Keep asking why. It's going to bring you to the core of what's going on inside you. It's an effective coaching technique, but it also helps you become self-aware and build closer relationships with every single person around you. What Most People Don't Realize About Their Feelings with Chip Dodd Chip Dodd, author of the amazing book The Voice of the Heart, is here with me today to talk about the import role of feelings in our lives. Chip and I talk about: The feelings God has given to us to live fully between the areas of grief and celebration How to be emotionally vulnerable and develop emotional resilience How we can use our feelings as tools to take ownership of our hearts and lives Learning to trust your feelings through identification, exploration and expression What Emotions Are You Feeling Right Now? "Jesus wept." - John 11:35 (NIV) I don't know about you, but to me, it's so moving to consider that Jesus had feelings. Jesus wasn't an emotional iceberg. He had feelings, highs and lows, emotions and pulls. Just before that verse, it says Jesus "was deeply moved in spirit and troubled" (John 11:33, NIV). And then He wept. I want share that with you today as an encouragement that you're not alone. So, I've got some journal questions for you as you process your own emotions and feelings right where you are. How does it feel to consider that Jesus had emotions and feelings just like you? What emotions are you feeling right now? Why do you feel that way? And after you write down that answer, ask again-why? I want you to continue asking yourself why until you get to the deepest root layer of what's really going on inside.

So, today, we're talking about building confidence. No matter how much we talk about confidence, we always have more to learn. What Confidence Actually Looks Like The idea of confidence can be so hard to grasp. Why is that? I've been reflecting on this recently, and here's what I've found: Confidence looks like courage, sounds like leadership, and feels like peace. Confident people seem like they have it all together. But you know what? They don't have it all figured out, but they do have courage. They're willing to put themselves out there, willing to fail, and willing to do it scared. Your confidence doesn't have to come from your situation or your circumstances. It doesn't even have to come from you. The true source of confidence is in the God that created you to begin with, and that feels like peace. How to Be a More Confident Business Owner My good friend and Academy member Sarah Lewis is joining me in the studio today to talk about growing confidence as a business owner. So often, we buy into the lie that we need to be good at everything to be confident, especially in our businesses. But the truth is that you can't be good at everything. You're not going to be good at every single thing, and you're not going to do it all perfectly. I hope you're encouraged by our conversation and inspired to find confidence in the things you're good at too. What Does Confidence Mean to You? So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. True confidence comes from who we are in God. And when we remember that, we have every reason in the world to be confident, to be at peace, to have courage, to be bold, to feel secure, and to be comfortable in our own skin. What's something you're so excited about but scared to share? How can you honor your feelings this week and, at the same time, honor others' feelings?

Often, we even make up our own false narratives and tell ourselves things like, I'm always going to be a failure. I'm not smart. I'm not going to amount to anything. Y'all, it's so important to identify the things that can cloud our judgement and keep us from the truth. Because when we can identify them, we can cut through them and get back to the one source of truth, which is the truth that's found in God's Word. Why It's Important to Remember What's True with Ellie Holcomb I sit down with my friend and Nashville-based singer-songwriter Ellie Holcomb to talk about her new children's book, Don't Forget to Remember. As a mom, there are many things that you have to remind your kids to do, like wash your hands and be kind. But it's also important to remind our kids (and ourselves!) the truth that we're loved by a God who made us on purpose for a purpose. I had the opportunity to sit down with longtime Academy member Pam Hook to talk about the goals she has for her life and business. Here's a hint: One always affects the other. Then, we'll grab a pen and some paper to journal through what this looks like in our own lives and businesses. Are You Chasing the Wrong Goals in Your Life? One of the most common questions I get is about goal setting: How do I know what goals to set? We get ideas in our head about how we want to grow or what we want to learn, so we set a goal. But here's the problem: It might be a goal that's great for someone else, but it doesn't mean it's the right goal for you. If you want to know where to get direction for your goals, you need to start by answering one simple question: What do you want? Your answer to this question will determine your goals. When you start to visualize where you want to be and what you want your life to look like, that informs the goals you set to get there. Here's the truth: If you don't define your finish line, you'll never cross it. If you don't take the time to set goals for your life, you'll end up living your entire life pursuing someone else's version of success. Stop Focusing on Things That Don't Matter I'm so excited because Pam Hook, one of our longtime Business Boutique Academy members, is joining me on the show today to talk about goal setting. Pam and I got to sit knee to knee and dig into her goals. At the end of the session, Pam was able to go home with more clarity on the next right steps for her life and her small business. Here are a few takeaways that might resonate with you too: Your business goals and spiritual goals aren't separate goals. One always affects the other. You can do anything, but you can't do everything. You have to say no to some things in order to say yes to the right things. Can You Answer This Difficult Question? Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. -Psalm 37:4 (ESV) What's so beautiful about this verse is that it reminds us that as we seek Him, get to know Him, and lean into Him, He will show us what the desires of our hearts are. He will open your eyes to things you didn't even know you wanted, to goals you didn't even consider, and to dreams that never crossed your mind before. He will do that because He loves you, and He has good plans for you. As we look to God, seek Him, and stay connected to Him, He shows us more of who we are and who He called us to be. He shows us the life He created us to live and the plans that He has for us. Remember: It's not on your shoulders to have it all figured out. Take some time to write down your answers to these questions as you process and put this into practice: How do you feel about what you want? Is it hard or easy to answer the question: What do you want? How does it feel to consider that God cares about what you want? What do you want? Write down the things that come to mind, the dreams that swell up in your heart, and the ideas in your head.

When it comes to reaching goals, pushing past limits, and trying new things, we often look to successful people to give us a formula we can follow. But so often, we're looking to the wrong things. We think it's their financial status, the relationships they have, the connections they make, what family they were born into, or even how they're uniquely wired. And while some of that may be true, those are not the true indicators of success. It comes down to one word. Are you ready for it? Perseverance. It's about pushing through and being willing to try again. And again. And again. It's persistence and never giving up. When we fail or fall down, it hurts. It bruises our ego and wounds our hope for the future. And that voice in our head starts to get really loud: Never again. I'm not going to do that again. I'm not going to risk that again. I'm not going to put myself out there like that again. See, that's proof. I never should've done that. See, that was dangerous. See, I wasn't cut out for that. See, I told you. We look at our failures and mistakes, and we use them as proof of why we never should've done the thing to begin with. I had a speaking event where I absolutely bombed-like, I wanted to disappear behind the podium. I cried the entire drive back to Nashville and told myself, Never again. I'll never speak again. I'll never walk on a stage. I'll never put myself out there like that to be embarrassed or humiliated again. Never again. But I did. And I'm so glad I did, because the number one reason I've been able to do anything I do is because I was willing to try again. It's all about perseverance. Just simply getting back up, dusting yourself off, and being willing to show up again and hold your head high-even when you're embarrassed. I've had my heart broken in many different ways. I've been in the hospital with my 3-year-old as he was hooked up to all these monitors to see if he was going to be okay. And he was. But at that moment I was terrified. I've lost family members. I've had family members and close friends go through tragedies in their life. I've also gone through seasons of darkness and wilderness where I felt like God didn't see me and didn't remember me and wondered if He was mad at me. Have you felt like that? Have you gone through disappointments or heartbreaks or tragedies? The kind where all you can think in those moments (even if you've had a lifetime of faith) is, God, where are you? Do you even see me? Do you even hear me? Do you know what I'm going through? We look to our heartbreak and draw conclusions about the character of God. But when you look at Scripture, God never said it would be easy. There's example after example of disappointment, trials, valleys, temptations and seasons of darkness. It's full of people feeling lost and scared and forgotten. It's full of those moments when we feel like He doesn't see us, or that He's left us or abandoned us. Or maybe it's that He's just not good. But you know what? Scripture also reminds us that even though we'll go through those seasons, God is with us. Even though we'll go through darkness, God is good. And even though we'll go through seasons where we're full of fear and anxiety of the unknown and experience heartbreak, disappointment and tragedy, He sees us, He's with us, and He's still good. I want to highlight an article I read the other day by the Harvard Business Review called "Manage Your Energy, Not Your Time." Specifically, I want to talk about where it says that energy can be "systematically expanded and regularly renewed by establishing specific rituals-behaviors that are intentionally practiced and precisely scheduled, with the goal of making them unconscious and automatic as quickly as possible." This is fascinating to me, and what's so amazing is that I found this article after I started my own rituals. See, you already have enough to worry about in a given day, am I right? Your brain is already working hard to keep up with your work, your business, your goals, your relationships and your to-do list. That takes energy! That's why it's so important to do things that create structure. Go to bed early. Wake up early. And stop giving your brain more than it needs to work on. You'll have more peace and freedom by creating rituals that give you real results in your life and with your energy. This Is Too Much to Handle Alone I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength. - Philippians 4:13 (NLT) The truth is, we can do things to boost our energy. We can do things that give us real results in our life. But we're still going to go through times that are hard. I've been through them, and I'm sure you have too. When we're in those seasons-or even when we're in really good times-it's important to remember that the number one source of strength and renewal of our energy is God. Not Living the Life You Want? Change This Habit. Y'all, I've made some massive mistakes with money. Growing up, I never really heard the word no very often. But that led to some problems when I got older. I didn't understand that you had to make choices with your money, live within your means, use a budget, and save for things you really want. For years, I chose to live a life of barely getting by and putting most of my paychecks toward debt and payments. I called my mom often, asking her to put money in my bank account because I couldn't make it to my next payday. But one day when I was around 24 years old, I had to call my mom again to ask her to put money in my bank account. I was so fed up. I knew I couldn't live like this. I knew that I wanted nothing more in my life than the dignity of paying for my own lifestyle, my own expenses and my own bills. That day, something in me changed. I decided I was going to work really, really hard to get out of debt. So, I tackled it like you tackle anything-one tiny step at a time. And exactly one week before I got engaged to my husband, Matt, I became debt-free. I made that final payment. I won't ever forget how it felt to feel that freedom. I won't ever forget how it felt to know that when I got paid on Friday, I was going to actually get to keep my money. I won't forget how it felt to go into my engagement completely debt-free. But I also will never forget the shame and the fear that haunted me every single payday. We've all bought into this lie that this is just how it is. But I want to tell you that there's a different way to live life. You don't have to struggle with your money forever. You don't have to barely get by. You don't have to feel fear when you check the mailbox. But in order for that to happen, you have to decide that you're going to do something different. You have to have that moment that I had and say, Never again. I'm not going to live like this anymore. I'm not going to depend on credit cards. I'm not going to be sinking in debt up to my eyeballs. Never again. Today, you have to think long term, not short term. Make the decision to change your life. When you do, you won't just change your life-you'll change your entire family tree. Today, we're diving into Part 5 of our series, and it's all about being willing to go. You have to be willing to go when God opens the door. After He's prepared you and humbled you, and after you've let go of things, you have to be willing to actually step through the open door in front of you. You've been prepared. You've been humbled. You've been faithful. But when God opens that door, you can't just stand there. You can't just stare at it. You can't be scared. You can't be stuck. You've got to be willing to actually step through the door that God has for you. You know, whenever I first got started speaking, I had no experience, no training, no certification, and no plans to be a speaker. Rachel Cruze (Dave Ramsey's daughter) had been booked to speak at a conference all over the country in different cities every single day. It was a crazy travel schedule. She was newly out of college, and it was basically two weeks before she was supposed to go on the road. Dave looked at the schedule and said, "Hey, this is not what we agreed to. This is more than we agreed to. You (me, Christy) have to go back to the conference and tell them she can only do half of the events." That was a problem. The events started in two weeks, and they thought they had Rachel for 20 dates. I had to be the bearer of bad news. I got on the phone and said, "Hey, I'm so sorry. She's all of the events, but she can do 10 of them, and you can pick whichever 10." I'll never forget what Chase (the man on the other end of the line) said to me. He said, "Christy, what am I going to do? I've got her booked for 20 different dates. What am I going to do with the other ones?" And I said, "I'll do them." And he said, "Can you speak?" I said, "I think so." You know, I'd never in my life. I just saw a problem and came up with a solution. There was a door that opened in front of me, and I walked through it. I can fix this. I can figure it out. I can make it up as I go. I'm just going say yes to this opportunity before I know how. Did I know how to speak to an audience? No. But I said yes before I knew how. So, when God opens a door in front of you, you've got to be willing to walk through it. You've got to be willing to go before you know how to say yes. Even if you're not sure how it's going play out, assume that you can. In the absence of information, don't assume there's a rule that you're breaking. Don't assume there's a reason you can't. Assume that you can. And then if you can't, you'll figure it out. God will open doors in front of you, but you've got to be willing to go-even if you're scared. Even if you're unsure. Even if you're insecure. Even if you don't know how it's all going to play out. Even if you don't have a perfect plan and a perfect path and a guarantee that it's going to be successful. You've got to be willing to go. This makes me think about the story of when the Israelites went to explore the Promised Land in the Old Testament. This is the land that God had promised to them, but they would not go and fight for it. They had their part to do. They had to walk through the door. Like the Israelites, we're participants in this life with God, and even in the plans that he has for us. But an entire generation missed out on the Promised Land-missed out on the plan and the promise that God had for them-because they wouldn't walk through the door. God told the Israelites where He was taking them, that He had gone before them, and that the land was theirs, but they still wouldn't walk through the door. They wouldn't go. Man, that's a powerful lesson. I don't know about you, but I want to be someone that walks through the door. I don't want to miss out on what God has for me over there because I'm scared. Yes, it's scary. You know why? Because the life God has for you is bigger and better than you can imagine. It's more exciting. It's new. It's different. Yes, it's...

Right now, I'm in this season of purging with three small kids. I'm constantly going through closets and toy bins. And when I sit down to do this, I get a little sad. I think about Conley's sentimental things, or Carter's shoes that he's outgrown, or Mary Grace's newborn onesies. I get a little sad that these seasons of our lives are ending. Even if some of those seasons were hard-like those sleepless nights of the newborn stage. But you know what? We experience this often. I get really sentimental when something's over. Whether I loved a season or not, I find that there's something about endings that makes it hard to let go. I worked at the YMCA for three years. During that time, I worked so hard and so many hours to the point of burnout. So, when this season of my life was ending-when I was leaving a job that my heart had not been in for a while, where I was working every night, every weekend, every week on the holidays-I still felt sad. And I still felt sad even though I was going to a job where I was going to have some balance. I was so excited about where I was going, and yet still sad it was over-still sad to leave behind those relationships, and that season of life, and everything that it represented. Life can be like that. Endings can be hard and sad. But you know what? Endings make new beginnings possible. Endings make that new thing that God is doing in your life possible. So, if you're going to live a life true to you and step into this bigger, better, more awesome life that God has for you, you have to be willing to let go of what's behind and what's no longer right for you. Friend, you've got to be willing to let some things go. If all we focus on are the endings, we're going to be sad and filled with regret. But I don't want you to miss the truth of endings: Endings make new beginnings possible. God has something for you, but He cannot put it in your hands until He takes something out. Isaiah 43:19 (NIV) says: "See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?" Journal Question: Write down an area of your life where God might be urging you to let go of something.

Being humbled is not fun. Have you ever gone through a season where God was humbling you? Being humbled hurts-it hurts to your core. It's more vulnerable than you ever want to be and stings deeper than you ever want to feel. And just when you think you can't take another hit, the hits just keep coming (because that's just what happens in those seasons). The truth is: God cares more about who you're becoming than where you're going. Hebrews 12:11 (NIV) says: "No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it." It seems painful, but your loving Father disciplines because He loves you. And He loves me. And if you're going to be true to you and the person that God created you to be in this bigger, better life, He's going to have to do some things in you before you're ready for it, or even before you can handle it. [share]God cares more about who you're becoming than where you're going.[/share] Being humbled is not a one and done type of thing. We're going to go through multiple seasons of this in life. Oswald Chambers, author of My Utmost for His Highest, describes these seasons as valleys of humiliation. Friend, if you're in a season of humbling right now or a valley of humiliation, God sees you. Deuteronomy 31:6 (NIV) says: "The Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you." He's with you in this valley. And I know it's hard, and I know it hurts, but take comfort in the fact that God sees you, and He's with you. This season's not forever. He's doing something in you. I love the Bible verse Isaiah 60:22 (NLT) that says: "At the right time, I, the Lord, will make it happen." Yes, you and I need to work hard. It's up to us to steward what He's given us. It's up to us to be faithful. But it's not all up to us, because we would point back and go, Look how good I did. Look at everything I accomplished. Look how strong and smart and clever and talented I am. No, no. God says that you should work hard with what He's given you, but when the time's right, He'll make it happen. So, you've got to be willing to be humbled. Be willing to go through those hard seasons. Be willing to be faithful when it hurts, and when you feel lost, and when you feel wronged, and when you feel abandoned. Be willing to be faithful even there in the valley, because it's not forever. But God is doing something in you in that valley to prepare you for what's next. Journal Questions: I want you to simply ask yourself: Where do I need to be humbled? What does it look like for me to set my pride aside and be humbled before God and what He's doing right now? Remember: God's preparing you for something in this life that's bigger, better and more awesome than you could ever imagine.
